A Victorian pietra dura mourning locket featuring a bouquet with a white rose, red roses, blue forget-me-nots, and a white lily of the valley. Forget-me-not stood for remembrance and lily of the valley for purity. Roses represent love and beauty, with the red rose specifically meaning martyrdom and the white rose purity. On the back of the carved onyx piece is a locket compartment with a lift-up glass lid. Inside is a photo of a girl in a dark Victorian dress with a bright white necklace and a hair ribbon. This locket is attached by a gold loop to a gold and onyx disc necklace. The graduated onyx discs are held together with gold and are concave on one side and flat on the other. The necklace has a box clasp. This hefty locket measures 6 by 4 cm and is 1 cm thick. The necklace measures 43 cm long, with the largest disc having a diameter of 1.5 cm. Both the locket and chain are in excellent condition. A much larger locket than is usually found in pietra dura.
